Lose Weight Without Starving Yourself

Most of my clients want to lose weight but when they hear the word, diet, they are negative and see a steep mountain to climb in front of them. The most common reply that I get is, “I just don’t want to feel hungry all the time.” They can’t stand the thought of being hungry, irritable and frustrated on the diet. They will rather be overweight than to struggle emotionally with feeling hungry, tired and in a bad mood all the time.


The good news is that you don’t have to feel this way...

First we need to identify what hunger is. Your body has an internal rhythm that triggers hunger when it needs fuel for energy. You feel hunger when you need to sustain your energy levels for cell function. This include cell repair, maintenance and healing. When you feel hunger it is to restore the balance between fuel and energy output.


When we are overweight, we get our signals crossed. We might feel hungry but it is actually due to hydration, vitamin or mineral shortage or a hormonal imbalance. Instead of replacing what our body really needs we turn to food. We need to learn the difference between hunger and just having a hunger trigger caused by something else.


Starving yourself does more harm than good. There is a reason why you “feel” hungry. The “hunger hormone” (ghrelin) in your blood and empty stomach signal the brain when you’re hungry.


But what are the other factors that can cause you to feel hungry?


You are not eating enough protein

You are not getting enough sleep

You are eating high carb and low fat diet

You are not drinking enough water

You are not eating enough fibre

You are not eating enough according to your exercises program

You are eating while busy

You are stressed


These are just some of the reasons why you feel hungry. The good news is that you don’t have to go hungry or feel hungry to lose weight. Eating regular nutritional meal will allow your body to fill itself to satisfaction but not allowing yourself to go hungry and avoid overeating. When you add protein to your meals, this will keep you full till you have the next scheduled meal.


Don’t wait to long before you have your next meal healthy sized nutritional meal. It is best to eat five or six smaller portions a day. Instead of eating three large meals, divide the same quantity of food into 6 meals. Don’t wait until you are hungry. The goal is to fuel your body not “feed” it when it is hungry.

By skipping meals or not eating enough small meals throughout the day, you slow down your metabolism and your body thinks it is in shortage of fuel and it will trigger your hunger hormone.

This healthy eating habit does not come easy or naturally for most already overweight people.
